Abstract

The study aimed to determine the role of professionalization as a key factor in ensuring the sustainable development of family-owned businesses in the pharmaceutical sector in Arequipa. A mixed, non-experimental, cross-sectional research design was applied, involving structured surveys administered to 50 family pharmacies and in-depth interviews with 10 managers, complemented by Pearson correlation statistical analysis and qualitative content analysis. The results showed that 60% of the pharmacies exhibited a medium level of professionalization, 25% a high level, and 15% a low level. However, gaps remain in environmental management, as only 30% implement waste policies, and in succession processes, which are formalized in just 40% of cases. In conclusion, professionalization constitutes a strategic factor for the continuity and sustainability of family pharmacies in Arequipa, as it strengthens their competitiveness, institutionalization, and social responsibility. Nevertheless, it is necessary to promote succession planning and environmental policies to ensure their long-term continuity and their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals
