Ethics and Best Practices

At Newman Business Review, we are firmly committed to the highest standards of academic integrity, editorial transparency, and ethical responsibility. This section outlines our core policies and practices that ensure the quality, trustworthiness, and credibility of the content we publish.

The guidelines described herein are aligned with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the indexing criteria of international databases such as Scopus. Our objective is to guarantee a fair, rigorous, and respectful editorial environment for authors, reviewers, readers, and the scientific community at large.

Below, we detail our editorial and ethical policies, organized into key areas that govern the operation and management of the journal.

Statement on Ethics and Publication Malpractice

The statement on ethics and publication malpractice is available in English on the journal’s website.

Newman Business Review focuses on publishing articles that meet the highest standards of quality and ethics. We uphold these ethical principles throughout all stages of the publication process and among all members of our journal, including authors, editors, reviewers, and the publishing entity. Plagiarism and any other unethical conduct are strictly prohibited.

CHAPTER 1. AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Article 1. On Originality and Plagiarism

Authors must ensure that the submitted research work is original and that any referenced texts or materials are properly cited. They guarantee that the manuscript does not contain sections from other authors’ research or fragments from other articles, even if authored by the same individual, and confirm the accuracy of the data presented. Plagiarism, in any of its forms or methods, is considered unethical behavior and is categorically rejected by the journal.

Article 2. On Multiple and/or Redundant Publications

Authors are required to submit, along with their research work, a “Statement of Author’s Proprietary Rights,” certifying that the manuscript is unpublished and transferring its intellectual property rights to the journal’s editorial committee. The submission and/or publication of the same work in multiple journals constitutes unethical behavior and will be rejected by the journal.

Article 3. On the Acknowledgment of Sources Used

The author must always provide accurate references for the sources and contributions cited in the article, properly acknowledging the work of other authors. All publications used in the development of the manuscript must be included. Additionally, privately obtained research methods—such as conversations, communications, or dialogues with third parties—are prohibited unless explicit written permission is obtained from those involved. Likewise, the handling of confidential matters, such as manuscript reviews or grant applications, is forbidden unless explicit written consent is granted by the corresponding author.

Article 4. On Article Authorship

Authorship is attributed to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of the article. All individuals who have made substantial contributions must be listed as co-authors. A proper hierarchy of authorship must be established according to the level of involvement in the work. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors review and approve the final version of the manuscript prior to publication.

Article 5. On Errors in Published Articles

If an author identifies a significant error or inaccuracy in their published article, they must immediately notify the editorial team, providing all necessary information so that the appropriate corrections can be included in a note appended to the article.

Article 6. On Responsibility

Responsibility for the content disclosed in scientific articles lies entirely with the authors. By signing the “Statement of Author’s Proprietary Rights,” authors release Newman Business Review from any legal action, claim of ownership, plagiarism, or any other type of third-party claim. Therefore, authors fully assume the consequences arising from the aforementioned actions.

Article 7. Use of Generative AI in Article Writing

Authors are required to disclose the use of generative Artificial Intelligence in the writing of the article. Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies must be used exclusively to enhance the readability and style of the text. The use of AI tools for data analysis or for drawing conclusions during the research process is not permitted.

Article 8. Changes in Authorship and Affiliation

Authorship and author affiliation are fundamental ethical aspects. Modifications to authorship (adding, removing, or changing authors) or to the declared affiliation after the initial manuscript submission will not be permitted, as these elements are decisive for the manuscript’s admissibility.

Article 9. Withdrawal of Manuscripts Under Review

Authors may withdraw their manuscript at any time, provided this occurs before they are notified of the volume and issue in which the article will be published. The withdrawal is recorded under the designation “withdrawn by the authors” in the journal. In exceptional cases—such as serious content errors or unethical actions detected after acceptance or publication—Newman Business Review will proceed to retract the article and remove it from its Library.

Article 10. Informed Consent

In cases where personal and sensitive information is used in the article, authors must obtain informed consent from the individuals concerned and explicitly mention it in the text. The identity of participants must not be disclosed unless strictly necessary and authorized by the individuals involved. Failure to respect anonymity, lack of informed consent, and the publication of such information constitute malpractice that violates ethical principles and is not acceptable to the journal.

Article 11. Transparency and Conflicts of Interest

Authors must declare any conflicts of interest—financial or otherwise—that may influence the results of the research in the final version of the manuscript. Additionally, they must disclose any financial support received for the development of the article.

CHAPTER 2. REVIEWER RESPONSIBILITIES

Article 12. Peer Review

Peer review is essential for the classification and publication of scientific works in our journal. Therefore, by accepting the review of a manuscript, reviewers commit to carrying out their task objectively, impartially, honestly, constructively, and professionally, with the aim of positively contributing to scientific knowledge and its dissemination.

Article 13. Adherence to Deadlines

Reviewers commit to completing the evaluation of manuscripts within the established timeframe, thereby respecting submission deadlines. If a reviewer feels unqualified to assess the subject matter or is unable to complete the review within the scheduled time, they must immediately notify the journal’s editorial team. At Newman Business Review, we strive to meet established deadlines out of respect for authors, their work, the review team, and the editors.

Article 14. Confidentiality

All manuscripts submitted for review are confidential. Therefore, it is expressly forbidden to share, discuss, or disclose the entirety or any part of the manuscript under review with third parties.

Article 15. On Objectivity

Peer review shall be conducted objectively, using the automated Open Journal System platform, where reviewers may submit their assessments anonymously, providing fair and well-reasoned justifications, particularly when recommending that an article not be published. Furthermore, personal judgments about the authors of the research are considered inappropriate.

Article 16. On Text Review

Reviewers must carefully examine the references cited in the manuscripts under review and identify any relevant sources that may have been omitted by the author. They are also obligated to inform the editorial committee of any similarities or attempts to obscure information in the reviewed article in comparison with other works.

Article 17. On Conflicts of Interest and Disclosure

Peer reviewers have a moral obligation to abstain from reviewing manuscripts in which there is any form of conflict of interest. Should such a situation arise, they must immediately notify the editorial team so that another reviewer may be assigned. Additionally, any confidential information or ideas obtained during the peer review process must be kept confidential and must not be used for the reviewer’s personal benefit.

CHAPTER 3. EDITORIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Article 18. On the Selection of Reviewers

The editorial committee is committed to rigorously selecting the most qualified and specialized reviewers for each research manuscript. Reviewers will provide a critical and objective assessment of the submitted article. Typically, two reviewers are assigned per manuscript; however, a third reviewer may be designated if one of the peers declines to evaluate a particular scientific article.

Article 19. On the Selection of Articles

The editorial committee of Newman Business Review is responsible for selecting the articles to be published. The editor must adhere to the journal’s ethical standards and all applicable legal guidelines, including but not limited to those prohibiting defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. Furthermore, the editor is free to discuss decisions regarding article selection with the editorial team, the scientific committee, or a reviewer.

Article 20. On Integrity

The editorial committee of the journal is committed to publishing articles that have been peer-reviewed and approved, based on the evaluations submitted through the OJS platform. This process is conducted without any discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or political opinion of the authors. Editors must ensure that all published research material complies with internationally accepted ethical guidelines.

Article 21. On Confidentiality

The editor and members of the editorial committee are strictly prohibited from disclosing, in whole or in part, any information regarding manuscripts submitted for publication to third parties, reviewers, or other editorial board members. Furthermore, the committee is committed to maintaining the confidentiality of research works, as well as the identities of authors and reviewers, thereby ensuring intellectual integrity throughout the evaluation process.

Article 22. On Editorial Decisions

The editorial committee must not reverse decisions already made or annul those of previous editors once the decision (whether acceptance or rejection) has been communicated and sent, unless there is a thorough analysis and well-founded justification. Additionally, the editorial committee is responsible for publishing errata pages or making necessary corrections when the situation requires it.

Article 23. On Similarity and Plagiarism

Editors reserve the right to verify the originality of submitted manuscripts using available software to detect inappropriate textual similarities.

Article 24. On Adherence to Timelines

The editorial team holds ultimate responsibility for ensuring the timely management of manuscripts. The established timelines are as follows: 90 days for article reception following the journal’s most recent issue; 3 weeks for peer reviewers to complete their evaluations and submit their assessments (with an additional 2 weeks if a tie-breaking reviewer is needed); and 2 weeks for authors to make the necessary revisions. This process is conducted on a semiannual basis. Furthermore, approved manuscripts that are not published in the current issue will be considered for the next edition, in recognition of the authors’ efforts.

Article 25. On Transparency and Conflicts of Interest

The editorial team is prohibited from using unpublished material in their own research unless they have obtained the author’s express written consent. Additionally, editors must refrain from handling manuscripts in which there is a conflict of interest due to any connection—whether competitive or collaborative—with institutions, companies, or authors involved.

Publication Ethics

Policy I. On Authorship and Contribution

Newman Business Review reaffirms its commitment to integrity, transparency, and ethics in scientific authorship. These principles are essential to ensure the quality of our publications and to foster respect within the academic community.

  • The order of authors should reflect the magnitude of their contributions and must be agreed upon in advance by all authors.
  • The journal will not modify the order of authorship without the explicit consent of all authors.
  1. Handling Authorship Disputes
  • In the event of disputes, the Editorial Committee will act as a mediator, evaluating the available evidence.
  • Decisions will be made in accordance with COPE guidelines on authorship disputes.
  1. Review of Authorship Standards
  • The journal promotes compliance with international authorship standards and may update these policies in accordance with best editorial practices.

  • Complaints must be submitted in writing to the Editorial Committee within 30 days of the notification of the editorial decision.
  • The committee will review the case and issue a reasoned response within a maximum of 30 calendar days.
  • If disagreement persists, the case may be referred to the Legal Department of the publishing institution: Escuela de Posgrado Newman.

Policy III. Conflicts of Interest

To ensure transparency in the editorial process, all authors, reviewers, and members of the Editorial Committee must disclose any potential financial, academic, institutional, or personal conflicts of interest.

  • Any kinship, friendship, or direct collaboration with assigned editors or reviewers must be explicitly declared.
  • This information will be used solely to ensure the impartiality of the evaluation process.

Policy IV. Data Sharing and Reproducibility

Newman Business Review strongly supports the principles of open science and promotes transparency and reproducibility in research.

Therefore:

  • Authors are encouraged to deposit the data used in their research in reliable open repositories, following the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
  • It is recommended to include a direct link to the data (when applicable) and its usage license within the article.
  • All articles and related data are available in open access, under licenses that allow responsible reuse (e.g., Creative Commons CC-BY).
  • The journal promotes the use of persistent identifiers (such as DOIs for articles and datasets, and ORCID for authors) and compliance with metadata standards that ensure interoperability.
  • The journal does not share or commercialize personal data with third parties. Only authors’ names and institutional emails are published, in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Law.

Policy V. Ethical Oversight

The journal adheres to the ethical standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the transparency principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA):

  • OASPA Principles
  • COPE Code of Conduct

Any report of ethical misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, data manipulation, redundant publication) will be handled confidentially, objectively, and in accordance with COPE’s established procedures.

Policy VI. Intellectual Property

  • By submitting a manuscript, authors transfer the rights of publication and distribution to the journal, without affecting their intellectual ownership of the work.
  • Authors retain their moral rights and may reuse their texts for academic purposes, provided proper citation is given.
  • Submitted works must be original, unpublished, and must not have rights assigned to third parties at the time of submission.

  • The Editorial Committee takes both preventive and corrective measures to identify and prevent the publication of works that violate these principles. All manuscripts are screened using text similarity detection tools and reviewed in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
  • In the event of a complaint or detection of potential misconduct, the editorial team will follow COPE’s established procedures to investigate and resolve the case objectively, confidentially, and fairly.
  • The journal does not tolerate or knowingly promote any form of unethical conduct and reserves the right to retract published articles if a serious violation is confirmed.

  • Newman Business Review publishes its articles under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which allows anyone to share, copy, redistribute, adapt, and build upon the published content—even for commercial purposes—provided that appropriate credit is given to the original author and source.
  • By submitting a manuscript, authors transfer the rights of publication and distribution to the journal, without affecting their intellectual ownership of the work. Authors retain their moral rights and may reuse their texts for academic purposes, as long as the original source is properly cited.
  • This policy aligns with open access principles and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA).
